Problem Solving for the Common Core
A K–5 Resource for Assessment and Instruction
New! This online resource provides teachers with open-ended math tasks specifically designed to support the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Content and Mathematical Practice. Our authentic problem solving engages students and develops their abilities to reason and communicate mathematically as well as to formulate mathematical connections.
Our real-world, problem-solving material is designed to engage students and develop their abilities to reason and communicate mathematically. Exemplars tasks encourage the Mathematical Practices.
The instructional tasks in this program are differentiated to include a 'more accessible' and 'more challenging' version. There are 4 or more instructional tasks provided for each applicable Common Core standard.
Summative assessments are provided for each applicable Common Core standard. Anchor papers and scoring rationales are included that demonstrate what student work meets and does not meet the standard in accordance with the Exemplars assessment rubric. These are effective learning tools for students, teachers and PLCs.
Preliminary Planning Sheets serve as the teacher's guide for every task, outlining the math concepts and skills that students need to know as well as alternative strategies they may use to solve a problem. This resource helps with lesson preparation and assessing student work.
Exemplars math assessment rubric offers teachers clear guidelines for evaluating student work and providing meaningful feedback. Our rubric criteria strongly supports the Standards for Mathematical Practice. Student rubrics are also included, which provide a tool for self- and peer-assessment.
Each task is uniquely designed for the Common Core. Alignments are included for both the Standards for Mathematical Content and Mathematical Practice.
