Pre K-K Math
Exemplars Pre K-K Math provides teachers, parents and caregivers with 20 differentiated problem-solving tasks to capitalize on this wonderful time of learning and curiosity.
Material is designed to be used in a learning environment. Some tasks may be selected to encourage young children to discover strategies, discuss number and other mathematical concepts, and provide opportunities to explore the fun of problem solving and communicating their thinking, while others may be selected as an assessment opportunity.
Exemplars Pre K-K is aligned to TEKS and provided in a print and digital format.
Pre K-K includes:
Engaging open-ended tasks require counting, patterning, combining of small groups of objects and the description of shapes. Specifically, children are asked to:
- Count as high as 10
- Work with ordinal numbers, first through 10th
- Combine groups of one, two or three objects and determine how many in all
- Solve equal-share tasks with up to 10 objects divided into two equal groups
- Continue two or three color patterns
- Describe pictures made with circles, squares, triangles and rectangles.
Each differentiated math task includes a more accessible and more challenging version.
Our standards-based Pre K-K Math Rubric supports the NCTM Process Standards. The use of mathematical representations and communication are primary components.
Each task includes anchor papers that demonstrate student work at the four performance levels of the Exemplars rubric as well as scoring rationales that describe why a particular criterion is assessed in certain way.
This resource is included as part of each Pre K-K Math publication. It provides tips for getting started with Exemplars in your classroom, an explanation of the Pre K-K rubric, guidelines for assessing students' work and strategies for scribing at the primary level.
