About Developing Writers

Exemplars Developing Writers material can be used for assessment, instruction and professional development.

Developing Writers gives both teachers and administrators a way of assessing students' writing and communication skills. It can be integrated into your existing curriculum to facilitate both assessment and instruction.

Our Developing Writers material features:

  • Alignments to national, state and provincial standards
  • Classroom-tested performance tasks
  • Rubrics
  • Annotated benchmark papers

The rubrics and benchmark papers provide teachers with a way to assess student performance and for students to self-assess their own work.

The most powerful form of professional development occurs when teachers work together to assess student performance and discuss student work. This experience ties together assessment, curriculum and instruction.

"Students are amazed at how they can lift their levels of achievement by following the rubric and knowing what is necessary for all levels."
