Formative Assessment

In addition to Assessment Rubrics, Exemplars performance material also includes task-specific rubrics that describe what is required to achieve each level of performance for a given task. Task-specific annotated samples of student work are also included for each of the four performance levels of the Exemplars rubric: Novice, Apprentice, Practitioner and Expert.

The specific descriptions noted in the annotated student benchmark papers point to the distinctions to look for when teachers are using Exemplars rubrics to assess different levels of student learning and understanding.

These papers are also useful in providing students with a concrete understanding of what work meets the standard and why. Exemplars benchmark papers are often used as a basis for student peer- and self-assessment.

Below is a sample of an annotated benchmark paper in science at the Practitioner level for the grade span 3-5.

"Students are amazed at how they can lift their levels of achievement by following the rubric and knowing what is necessary for all levels."
