Best of Number and Operations, K-2: Teaching Number Sense and Place Value to Young Children (Make and Take)

In this session, participants will learn firsthand how to implement new approaches to help their students understand the power of number sense and place value. Time will be spent exploring conservation of number, subitization, part/whole relationships, compensation, and counting on and counting back. Participants will leave feeling confident and eager to engage students with innovative learning techniques.

The Broad Agenda

  • Better understand links to the math TEKS' focus on using multiple strategies, models and place value to add and subtract
  • Help your students grasp the power of number sense and achieve a deep understanding of place value development
  • Use the concept of 10
  • Engage in hands-on activities, manipulatives and applicable math games that support the math TEKS
  • "Make and take" classroom resources to use with your students
  • Practice techniques learned
  • Understand the various learning styles and apply techniques to engange all students
  • Learn routine formative assessment practices
