Math Exemplars:
A Perfect Complement
Exemplars authentic math material is aligned to Common Core. Our differentiated, problem-solving tasks promote critical thinking and reasoning, and are an effective resource in meeting these standards.
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematical Practice are comprised of the following:
- Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
- Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
- Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
- Model with mathematics.
- Use appropriate tools strategically.
- Attend to precision.
- Look for and make use of structure.
- Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
Students are also called on to practice and apply mathematical ways of thinking to real-world issues.

Exemplars supplemental material offers:
- Real-world, problem-solving tasks that engage students. Exemplars material is open-ended and designed to captivate students' interests and promote communication of their thinking and reasoning (leading to higher-order thinking).
- Differentiated tasks for use with students at varying developmental levels. Each math task includes a more accessible and more challenging version.
- Assessment rubrics. Our standards-based math rubric outlines expectations and provides a clear set of guidelines for assessing student work. Student communication and use of mathematical representations are primary components.
- Student rubrics. Our student rubrics demonstrate what work meets the standard and why, using kid-friendly terms and images.
- Annotated anchor papers. Each task includes anchor papers that demonstrate student work at the four performance levels of the Exemplars rubric. These may also be used for student self- and peer-assessment.
- Timely and comprehensive feedback. Exemplars is a proven formative assessment tool that reflects student understanding, reasoning, achievement and growth to guide instruction and determine next steps for each individual learner.
- Rich teaching notes for assessment and instruction. Write ups are provided with each task to offer teachers guidance.
- Interdisciplinary links. These links provide teachers with suggestions for extending tasks to incorporate other subject areas.
- Alignments. Material is aligned to Common Core, Individual State, NCTM and STEM standards as well as various math texts.
