Looking at Number and Operations, 6-8:
Proportional Reasoning, Fractions, Decimals, Percents, Ratios and Integer Operations

Preparing students for the transition to high school can be a challenge, as many still struggle with basic rational operations. This workshop provides teachers with alternative tools to help students understand proportional reasoning and its relationship to computing with rational numbers (fractions, percents, decimals, ratios and integers). Teachers will investigate the basic meaning of a fraction, equivalency, percent, ratio and proportions. This session will be presented in the context of problem solving.

The Broad Agenda

  • Explore new strategies to help students move from additive and multiplicative reasoning to proportional reasoning
  • Investigate the basic meaning of a fraction, equivalency, percent, ratio and proportions
  • Engage in conceptual activities and applicable math games
  • Use manipulatives and graphic organizers
  • Create and take home classroom resources to use with your students
  • Practice techniques learned

"This was one of the most beneficial workshops I have ever attended. It directly addressed solutions to existing district problems."
