Assessing Student Performance and Using Results to Improve Performance

At this level, participants bring student work from their own schools to assess and annotate. Assessing shows how students have performed; annotating provides an understanding of why students are at their respective levels. As a result of this work, if curriculum and instructional modifications are needed, they will become apparent.

Participants also focus on ways to encourage students to explain their strategies and justify their solutions. Using appropriate problems and scaffolding of students' prior knowledge, this session also concentrates on assessing students' abilities to apply their mathematical skills in problem-solving situations.

Components for all workshops include:

  • Assessing your own school's student work
  • Annotating student work from your school
  • Addressing specific rubric and benchmark questions as they relate to your own students' work
  • Identifying grade level expectations for problem solving across the grades
  • Beginning to identify strategies for improving your own students' performance and moving students to a higher level of the rubric

"Students are amazed at how they can lift their levels of achievement by following the rubric and knowing what is necessary for all levels."
