Solar System

Solar System Task

Tracy Lavallee, Exemplars Consultant & Teacher

The task Solar System was developed as part of our final assessment of our Solar System unit. One of our objectives for this unit was to teach students research skills and report writing within the context of science. This assessment was designed to assess not only the concepts of the unit, but these literacy skills as well. It was a perfect way to integrate the two subjects. We utilized the Painted Essay™ format for note taking and report writing. The content was provided through a variety of science activities as well as through research using print-based materials and the Internet. The Science Exemplars rubric was used to assess the content of the report and our local writing rubric was used to assess the writing. The benefits of this type of integration are use of time; we were able to focus more time on science and in-depth learning because of the work in writing we did; and the students saw the natural connections between what we do in writing with science.
