About the Exemplars Assessment Rubric

The Exemplars scoring rubric allows teachers to examine student work against a set of analytic assessment criteria to determine where the student is performing in relationship to each of these criteria. This assessment tool is designed to identify what is important, define what meets the standard and distinguish between different levels of student performance.

The four performance levels are:

  1. Novice
  2. Apprentice
  3. Practitioner (meets the standard)
  4. Expert

The five assessment categories include:

  1. Problem Solving
  2. Reasoning and Proof
  3. Communication
  4. Connections
  5. Representation

Exemplars rubric criteria reflect the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice and parallel the NCTM Process Standards.

Here's What People Are Saying

Embedding Common Core aligned Exemplars tasks into our units of study has strengthened teachers understanding of the Common Core Learning Standards while improving student performance. Significant growth in student achievement has taken place across the grades in the Mathematical Practices ... even our youngest students do the work of real mathematicians to represent and solve authentic real-world problems.
