Exemplars professional development gives Texas educators a firm foundation to get started with performance-based assessment and instruction.

By creating a hands-on experience, Exemplars workshops provide teachers with the instructional skills they need to help their students become successful with problem solving and the requirements of the new math TEKS.

Teachers leave our workshops confident to use Exemplars performance tasks, rubrics and anchor papers to assess student performance and link assessment results to teaching and learning.

Sessions for Teachers, Coaches, Specialists

Level 1: Standards-based Assessment and Instruction for the Math TEKS: Problem Solving, Rubrics and Achor Papers

Through the lens of problem solving, this introductory session will provide participants with methods to support and guide mathematics assessment and instruction for the Math TEKS. At this workshop, individuals will learn how to identify what constitutes a good problem and a good problem solver, to assess student work with proficiency using the Exemplars math rubric and to use assessment results to guide instruction and improve student performance.

In this session, participants will:

  • Explore the essentials of performance-based assessment and instruction to support the TEKS for Mathematical Process Standards and Content
  • Discuss appropriate instructional shifts and tools to effectively implement the Math TEKS including the importance of teaching a focused mathematics curriculum organized into rich units of study
  • Use Exemplars rubrics and anchor papers to assess student work
  • Use problem-solving tasks to enrich learning opportunities and supplement district-adopted math programs
  • Introduce instructional techniques that promote the Standards for Mathematical Processes, students' higher-order thinking skills and mathematical communication
  • Make the link from assessment to instruction to improve teaching and learning
  • Define the language of assessment, mathematics, problem solving, Depth of Knowledge, Universal Design as well as types of portfolios
  • Understand the fundamentals of problem solving and strategies for implementation
  • Use differentiated problems to personalize instruction to meet individual student's needs
  • Help students become proficient in self-assessment

Level 2: Standards-Based Classroom Modeling: Problem Solving and Formative Assessment for the Math TEKS

The Classroom Modeling session demonstrates the problem-solving, assessment and communication process across all levels to support the TEKS for Mathematical Processes and Mathematical Content.

Components for this workshop can include:

  • A working portfolio lesson that addresses the request of the classroom teacher(s). The lesson may focus on a particular mathematical content area, standard, strategy, multi-step problem and/or using mathematical language;
  • Questioning students about their thinking in order to generate mathematical connections, communication and reasoning, both verbally and in writing;
  • Demonstrating personalized instruction;
  • Introducing instructional techniques that promote students' understanding and use of the Mathematical Process Standards as well as students' higher-order thinking, reasoning and communication skills;
  • Building student confidence and interest in mathematical problem solving and communication; and/or
  • Utilizing Exemplars open-ended problems to introduce mathematical content, representations, language and connections, and to encourage mathematical discussion.

Level 3: Assessing Student Performance Against the Math TEKS and Using Results to Improve Performance

This mathematics session is designed for participants with a basic understanding of performance-based assessment and instruction as well as the Exemplars assessment rubric. Typically, participants will have completed the Level 1 training and have some experience doing problem solving with assessment in their classrooms.

In this session, participants will:

  • Assess student work brought from their classrooms to inform instruction
  • Discuss strengths and weaknesses evident in student work in relation to the Math TEKS and the Exemplars assessment rubric
  • Review resources for working/assessment portfolios and use of Exemplars Preliminary Planning Sheets
  • Address specific questions pertaining to Exemplars assessment rubric to improve scoring validity and reliability
  • Develop and share strategies to enhance learning opportunities
  • Investigate strategies for developing students' mathematical communication
  • Analyze data in mathematics to inform instruction
  • Use student errors in mathematical reasoning as a teaching tool
  • Develop strategies for moving students from an "almost meets" the standards level to a "meets" the standards level
  • Utilize critical-thinking questions to promote mathematical connections
  • Teach students how to communicate their mathematical thinking
  • Integrate mathematical representations into problem solving

Level 4: Integrating Content, Problem Solving and Assessment in the Classroom to Support the TEKS: Mathematical Process Standards as well as Mathematical Content Standards.

This mathematics workshop is designed for participants who have a stronger understanding of performance-based assessment and instruction and the Exemplars assessment rubric. Typically, participants will have completed training sessions for Levels 1–3. The focus shifts from the classroom level to the school/district level to assure success.

In this session, participants will:

  • Assess students' work to identify school/district benchmarks
  • Create and modify existing problem-solving tasks, including Preliminary Planning Sheets, for working/assessment portfolios
  • Analyze, interpret and use assessment data to improve teaching and learning
  • Discuss meaningful feedback for students aimed at improving mathematical performance
  • Develop assessment resources at the grade, school and/or district level
  • Use results from multiple performance assessments to improve performance at the school/district level
  • Address individual/classroom/grade-level/school/district assessment needs
  • Develop/Select formative and summative assessments at the school/district level
  • Embed problem solving into core curriculum to support Math TEKS

Session for School/District Leaders

Developing Leadership Capacity for the Math TEKS

This workshop is designed to give math teams, coaches and mentors the tools they need to support their colleagues in implementing standards-based assessment and instruction to support the TEKS for Mathematical Processes and Mathematical Content effectively in their schools.

In this session, participants will:

  • Learn what to look for in a standards-based mathematics classroom
  • Review Exemplars assessment rubric
  • Assess student work to build reliability and validity with Exemplars assessment rubric
  • Assess student work at the individual/class/campus/district level to determine:
    • What we know our students know;
    • How well our students are performing;
    • Why our students are performing this way;
    • What our students need to relearn, practice;
    • What we learn about our teaching;
    • What our next steps are for these students.

  • Discuss possible actions for supporting peers
  • Use samples of student work to share strategies (questioning, connections, representation, mathematical language, etc.) necessary to raise students to the Practitioner level (meeting the standard) and beyond
  • Begin/Develop an assessment system that supports the Math TEKS
  • Select performance tasks for working portfolios
  • Select performance tasks for assessment portfolios
  • Select grade-level/school/district anchor papers
  • Discuss calibration/scoring sessions
