Standards-based assessment and Instruction

Common Core Standards

Math Exemplars is a perfect complement to the Common Core.

Our differentiated, problem-solving tasks promote critical thinking and reasoning. Material calls on students to practice and apply mathematical ways of thinking to real-world issues.

The Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Practice are comprised of the following:
  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  4. Model with mathematics.
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  6. Attend to precision.
  7. Look for and make use of structure.
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Since 1993, Exemplars has been the leader in publishing performance tasks of the highest quality to enrich instruction, facilitate assessment (formative and summative) and enhance professional development.

Our supplemental material offers:

Real-world, problem-solving tasks that engage students.

Exemplars open-ended material is designed to captivate students' interests and promote communication of their thinking and reasoning (leading to higher-order thinking).

Differentiated tasks for use with students at varying developmental levels.

Each differentiated math task includes a more accessible and more challenging version.

Assessment rubrics.

Our standards-based math rubric supports CCSS for Mathematical Practice and NCTM Process Standards. The use of mathematical representations and communication are primary components.

Alignments.

Material is aligned to Common Core, individual state, NCTM and STEM standards as well as various math texts.

Annotated anchor papers.

Each task includes anchor papers that demonstrate student work at the four performance levels of the Exemplars rubric. These may also be used for student self- and peer-assessment along with our student rubric.

Timely and comprehensive feedback.

Exemplars is a proven formative assessment tool that reflects student understanding, reasoning, achievement and growth to guide instruction and determine next steps for each individual learner.

Here's What People Are Saying

I am a special education teacher and I have been using the math Exemplars with my students. They enjoy doing them and have actually asked to do them. I have noticed that with each problem we solve more and more students are trying to stretch their thinking so they can become 'Experts.'
